Chief Red Cloud was born in 1822 near the forks of the Platte River in what is now known as North Platte, Nebraska. Chief Red Cloud was a Lakota warrior and statesman.

Red Cloud is considered to be one of the most important Lakota leaders of the 19th century because of his success in confrontations with the United States government.
